Quality Versus Size …The Projector

Projector images seem to be getting bigger as we move towards the future, especially with the brightness that is offered with projectors that churn out the lumens. We’ve all talked about how the brightness of the projector’s image can give you a larger image because obviously you can project from a further distance without sacrificing brightness. You need to take into account however the maximum distance allowable before your image starts to distort and get grainy or fuzzy.

Many projectors are coming out with throw distances allowing images that are 9 feet wide yet the image is still only as good as its smaller counterparts. So it seems as if they are sacrificing quality for quantity. We can debate size versus picture quality for as long as we would like, but last I heard, people’s rooms were not growing at the rate that projector image appears to be growing at.

Another concept among some projector manufacturers is actually improving the viewing image before getting all carried away in the whole issue about size. For instance, Infocus has introduced the new X3 to take over the reigns as the current flagship projector beating out the Screenplay series and the X2. The deal with the X3 is that is focuses on improving the clarity and crispness of the picture as opposed to increasing brightness and or screen size.

The image that the X3 produces is a full 3 feet smaller than it’s predecessor , the Screenplay 4805, but can boast of quality that is noticeably crisper. And when I mean noticeably crisper… I’m talking… the average person will notice the difference and not simply those whose eyes are tuned for this kind of inspection.

Remember when projection television sets first came out and even though they were bigger, they had the very noticeable screen door? Those manufacturers eventually understood that the sizes of their screens were big but they still weren’t comparing to some of the really nice tube models. Well, the image revolution is coming my friends, and their will be no sacrifices.

Hopefully, the evolution will of screen size will grow side by side with the technology for better quality images. As for the Infocus X3, and its features including its ultra sensitive projector lamp, well...that will be covered once we get a chance to really see it in action.
