Sony Raises the Pixel Bar
Sony announced this past week that they will be launching the world’s first 4000+ pixel projector. The official resolution on this puppy is a mind boggling 4096 x 2160 pixels and the unit supports a 1800:1 contrast ratio that will make the contrast ratios of just a couple years ago, seem obsolete. In fact, Sony is hoping that this projector, which is named the SRX-R110, can start to replace cinema film projectors in the near future. The unit looks like something out of Darth Vader’s gadget closet. It is all black, with the lens centered squarely in the middle of the unit. The lens bulges up a little and the back literally looks like Mr. Vader’s sloping helmet. The projector lamp inside the units pumps out an, get this, out of this universe, 10,000 ANSI lumens. Making the SRX-R110 a projector that is capable of blasting out an image to a movie house audience. With that said, a cinema in Norway has already bought the unit and has been wowing customers for a while now. Next time your in a movie theater take a detailed look at the image resolution up on the screen, then close your eyes and imagine it in 4096 x 2160 resolution.
Excited? Well, Sony is excited too and recently launched the SRX-R110 at the Cinema Expo from June 27th – 30th at the Amsterdam RAI. The one drawback the unit has, if you can call it a drawback, is that it can only play films that are filmed digitally or converted to digital format. This fact will probably limit the unit to playing cutting edge films or new big budget films that have been recorded digitally. However, as the movie industry slowing seeps and merges into the digital world, I imagine this will not be a limiting factor. For instance, Steven Speilberg’s new film The War of the Worlds was filmed completely in digital format.
The SRX-R100 will be available in commercial markets in the coming year. There is no price tag set as of yet, but the projector will probably be expensive and not reasonable for the average consumer for some time. It is thrilling to know, however, that there will be a time when your home projector will compete on an even playing field with movie house units.
