Studios Pushing For Digital Integration

When you go to watch a movie at the theatre these days, it isn’t too much different from the movies of the last few decades. The theatres’ projector still consisted of a reel and had to be purchased from the studios in this particular format.

There is a certain feel about this old style of movie going because you still see the glitches that are evident in reel-to-reel film. The projectionist, way back in the day, still had to change the reels and manipulate a couple of projectors at once.

Except for the retro theatres that are clinging on to this old style, over the last few decades the technology is has been available to eliminate the skilled projectionist, and employ a mechanized system to change the reels.

There is a major movement among Hollywood studios now, that was started years ago by a man by the name of George Lucas, to push for Digital Cinema. Of course, all cinemas would have to convert to the new digital projection systems, which would cost a load of money, and more costs would be passed onto the consumer.

The Hollywood studios would merely have to switch over to the new production and distribution methods, and expect those theatres who wanted to participate, to pay for the whole thing. This would very un-scrupulous, but not unheard-of by Hollywood standards.

Fortunately, some of the major Hollywood studios are deciding whether they would front the costs of the projectors and equipment themselves if the movie theatres paid for the installation costs. If this deal comes to fruition, or at least if some kind of compromise between the studios and the movie theatres takes place, it will be a win for the industry.

With the new technology in place and the new digital projectors being able to accept information in such an efficient manner, distribution will become more efficient and cost effective. Distribution will become as simple as sending the information via satellite or fiber optic cables, and there will be less waste in regards to materials and time.

This will develop a whole new world for hackers to attempt to steal the ‘movie information’ for personal gain. Everything will be encrypted to the highest degree possible I’m sure, but when there is a will, there is a way. Either way, it will hopefully be less expensive for movie goers to experience the Silver Screen.

There is inevitably going to be the debate between purists who don’t want to change to digital, and the digital revolutionaries.
