Texas Instruments Profits Soaring
Texas instruments, the company that was responsible for the whole DLP technology thing that changed the projector world is recording huge gains in net profit. The president of Texas Instruments, Rich Templeton says that the growth is due to their diversity and the huge amount of electronics that require the use of TI’s analogue and DSP technology. Most people probably think that Texas Instruments is a company that produces mediocre calculators for high school students but that is far from what they have accomplished technology wise. The Digital Light Processor that is used in the majority of high-end multimedia projectors is what is fueling much of the sales and over the last year has grown by 10 percent. The multimedia projector market is growing at a fast rate and with that the demand for quality parts and technology is also increasing.
The DLP chip that TI introduced in 1987 is what creates the high quality image produced by the DLP projectors. Light is reflected onto the chip by the projector lamp. The micro-mirrors mounted onto the chip display the correct amount of light within the gray scale which then are processed through the color wheel and blam!
The DLP technology is clearly ahead of the LCD projector technology in regards to image quality and crispness. This is why the DLP projectors typically cost more. The prices are constantly dropping as the technology gets better allowing more people to take advantage of the quality.
It is no wonder why Texas Instruments is profiting from this revolution. With the drop in costs, more projector manufacturers are using DLP technology, and it is in turn more affordable for the consumer.
LCD technology isn’t going away and is getting better as well so look for TI to have something up their sleeve. The mirrors mounted onto the mini chip are getting smaller and more efficient at reflecting light. The spaces between the mirrors are also getting smaller therefore reducing the effect of stray light thus producing an image that has better contrast.
At some point, you will not be able to make the chip any smaller without compromising the image so there must be other directions the technology can go? Ti is investing over 2 billion dollars every year on research and development so you can count on them to blow your mind.
